Job Description

Rock Creek Church is trusting God to replant our church in Rockville, Maryland, located just outside of DC in Montgomery County – one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the country. Rock Creek Church is looking for a qualified man called to ministry to serve as a pastoral resident for one year (beginning as early as 8/2022 and as late as 1/2023). The purpose of this position is to help move the mission of the church forward by engaging in pastoral ministry alongside the lead pastor, staff and elder team. This person would also assume the primary responsibility of preaching when the lead pastor (Jeff Martin) goes on sabbatical (approximately from April to July 2023). Rock Creek Church is a member of the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) and Acts 29.

The candidate must be aligned with our vision – “trusting God to multiply diverse communities of people, transformed and empowered by the gospel." The candidate must also meet the qualifications of an elder. We prefer to have a candidate from an ethnic minority background with a strong interest in multi-ethnic ministry. This is a full-time paid position. In addition, discretionary funds will be provided, as well as a budget for attending conferences and events associated with the EFCA and Acts 29 movements.

Primary Responsibility – Preaching ministry:
• Complete reading and homework assignments related to preaching.
• Apply the principles learned in training to preaching monthly messages before Jeff’s sabbatical, and receive ongoing feedback and training.
• During Jeff’s sabbatical, the candidate would continue with some discipleship responsibilities and move to preaching a sermon series from a book of the Bible (approximately 3 out of 4 Sundays).
• Continue preaching approximately monthly when Jeff returns.

Primary Responsibility – Community Group Ministry:
• Help lead a gospel-centered small group ministry that fits within the vision and values* of Rock Creek Church. The current model includes Community Groups (CGs) which focus on discipleship, care and ministry.
• In addition to leading a CG, this person would be responsible to help recruit, train and coach CG leaders.
• Provide a strategic plan for the immediate and future growth of our CGs.
• Oversee CG leader training, budgets and systems to process assimilation of groups.
• Implement Rock Creek’s current strategy of monitoring and improving the health of CGs.

Secondary responsibilities:
• Attend weekly staff meetings and meet with Jeff weekly for coaching.
• Eldering - About 5 hours a week, with very few added “generalist responsibilities.”
• Other responsibilities - Based on the candidate’s desires and strengths may include: Worship, student ministry, recovery ministry, outreach, etc.

• A passionate, growing relationship with Jesus that is evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit.
• Has demonstrated living in accordance with the gospel through regular repentance and faith.
• Can, without reservation, support the EFCA’s Statement of Faith and the distinctives of the Acts 29 church planting movement.
• Committed to sharing their faith as a way of life and living on mission.
• Has a strong sense of calling to ministry.
• Has at least 2 years of significant ministry experience (leading small groups, discipling, preaching etc.)
• Is willing to receive further training in preaching.
• Completed seminary degree. We may also consider candidates currently pursuing seminary education.
• Proven capacity to identify, mobilize and equip high-level volunteers.
• Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills, proven presentation skills and the ability to effectively teach God’s Word.
• Matches the biblical qualifications of an elder outlined in 1 Tim 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.
