Minister of Family & Children
Job Description
The Minister of Family and Children provides biblical leadership for families and children in the church and in the community, with a primary focus on elementary ministry. He will disciple volunteers and leaders to help him carry out this mission.
QUALIFICATIONS
Personal Requirements:
- Must be a born-again Christian whose character is above reproach (1 Timothy 3:2)
- Demonstrates an ability to work with many different types of people
- Loves, nurtures and develops the “flock” by word and deed
- His relationship with his children, family, associates and friends honors the Lord
- His “leadership style” and demeanor should exemplify servanthood (Philippians 2:3-4)
Professional Requirements:
- Three years or more of experience and leadership in local-church ministry
- Should have or be pursuing a college degree in a related field
- Should demonstrate leadership and staff management skills
- Be committed to the vision, direction and philosophy of Sparta Church
Skills Necessary:
- Ability to build relationships with children, parents and volunteers
- Experience in recruiting and equipping volunteers
- Ability to problem solve and implement solutions
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to perform work with minimum supervision within assigned deadlines
- Able to handle confidential matters and material with integrity
- Ability and willingness to collaborate and work as a member of the pastoral team
RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Leader – Provide ongoing vision, leadership and direction for the church and those involved in the children’s ministry. He will seek the Lord’s direction for ways to build and enhance the family and children’s ministry. He will provide leadership over gospel-centered programs and initiatives that reach the children and families in the church and community. These include overseeing:
- Sunday morning children’s education classes and worship
- Weeknight discipleship curriculum for children
- Administration, organization and planning of long-range goals and ministries
- Contact (visitation, phone, letter, etc.) with families
- Staff and operations of seasonal outreach programs. Provide spiritual leadership for these programs (i.e. Upwards Basketball, summer day camp)
- Service and outreach events for the community (i.e. Trunk or Treat, Christmas Festival, Egg Hunt)
2) Teacher/Discipler - Actively involved in the teaching ministry of the church with primary emphasis on children and families
3) Leadership Training and Development - Responsible for identifying, recruiting, training and discipling strong adult lay-leadership in each ministry
4) Prayer - Commit to a regular life of prayer for our families and children, ministry volunteers and children’s ministry as well as implement a plan for developing a broad-based prayer support team within the congregation for his entire ministry
5) Counseling - Meet the individual needs of families through an effective relational ministry, providing biblical counsel and spiritual guidance as needed
6) Other Pastoral Responsibilities
- Work in harmony with the Director of Youth to provide a seamless discipleship succession of elementary students to the youth ministry
- Perform as requested, including but not limited to, occasional preaching for worship and special services
- Assist other pastors in your area of gifting and special skill sets
REPORTING AND EVALUATION
The minister of family and children will be accountable to and supervised by the senior pastor. The performance evaluation of the minister of family and children will be reviewed by the senior pastor and the elder board.
About this Church
Sparta Church began in 1995 as a church plant from the humble beginnings of approximately 40 people. Today, we are a church of approximately 900 in live weekly attendance in addition to an active online church community. We are located in a rural/suburban community in beautiful northwestern New Jersey, just over an hour from New York City. Sparta Church is not under the authority of any denomination but is affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of America.
