Job Description

Journey Evangelical Church (JEC) is an English-speaking church located in the City of Westminster, Orange County, California. We are a congregation (100-120) eager to grow spiritually and seek a dedicated, passionate senior pastor who has strong leadership skills, excellent communication abilities and a deep commitment to the gospel.

General Responsibilities

The senior pastor, under the authority of the Church Leadership Team (CLT) is the spiritual leader of the church and serves primarily as preacher, shepherd and teacher. He is responsible for discerning God's leading and supporting the church through functions such as worship, prayer, equipping classes (Family Bible Hour), visitation, fellowship and life groups, outreach, discipleship and other ministry programs.

Our senior pastor’s responsibilities include preaching, teaching, pastoral care and leadership while working alongside of our elders, deacons, volunteers and the pastoral staff; it includes leadership in an effort to build a church that attracts and retains new attendees.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Provide spiritual leadership to the congregation, fostering a culture of faith, love and service. Lead the church to be a praying church, dependent on, and honoring of, our gracious and loving God. Assist JEC in internalizing and implementing our core values.
  2. Develop and deliver engaging, biblically based sermons during worship services, as well as on special occasions and events.
  3. Plan and lead worship services, collaborating with our worship committee, to provide worship services that are glorifying to God, meaningful and spiritually enriching. Develop preaching calendar that aligns with JEC’s vision, mission and core values.
  4. Model leading and teaching Bible studies and train Bible study leaders.
  5. Provide pastoral care for members of the congregation, including visiting the sick, counseling those in need and offering support during times of crisis.
  6. Facilitate and encourage existing small group ministries, prayer groups, our missions team and Bible studies groups. Lead the development of new groups and, if appropriate, new approaches to small groups.
  7. Work with the church leadership team (JEC’s elders) and the pastoral staff to establish and execute a strategic plan for the church’s growth and leadership development, by identifying needs of the church, planning and developing new ideas, ministries and programs, with a starting growth target of 5% / year.
  8. Serve as a mentor, supervise and support pastoral staff, administrative staff and volunteers; fostering a positive, collaborative work environment with leadership development; while ensuring that church operations fully support church activities, programs and regulatory requirements.
  9. Perform other pastoral duties, including but not limited to: weddings, funerals, baptisms and dedications, and other church events as required.
  10. Develop leadership training for elders, deacons and members of the congregation.

Qualifications

  1. Master of Divinity, from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) ordained or eligible for EFCA ordination with a target to achieve ordination within 1 year, or complete Transfer of Ordination within two years.
  3. A minimum of five years of pastoral experience, with a proven track record of effective leadership, ministry development, and/or community outreach.
  4. Must be a US Citizen.
  5. Exemplifies the characteristics and leadership qualities as listed in separate attachment.
