The Student Ministries Director should exhibit the character qualities described in 1 Timothy 3:1–7, Titus 1:5–9, and 1 Peter 5:1–5. Although ministry competencies are essential, character is of even greater importance—evidenced by a growing relationship with Christ and a genuine desire to lead both middle and high school students into Christ-likeness.
In addition, the ideal candidate exhibits these qualities:
• Teachable – Serving from a position of humility, embracing challenges and committed to living and growing within authentic community.
• Team player – Energized by a team environment, promoting teamwork and self-sacrifice alongside SCC staff and volunteer leaders.
• Servant leader – Committed to leading through service.
• Self-aware – Possessing a personal understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses.
• Person of prayer – Someone who makes prayer a foundation for both life and ministry.
Core Competencies:
• Proven disciplemaker – Demonstrated ability to shape and lead a disciplemaking ministry that cares for the whole student—from middle school through high school—as they mature in Christ.
• Strong relational skills – Ability to connect meaningfully with students of all ages, parents, volunteer leaders and staff.
• Administrative competence – Organizational, administrative and leadership capability to oversee a multi-age student ministry.
• Team builder – Skilled at equipping and releasing others into leadership roles across both ministries.
• Biblical foundation – Ability to use Scripture as the foundation for teaching and counseling students, families and volunteer leaders.
• Strong communication skills – Competency in verbal and written communication across diverse audiences, including middle schoolers, high schoolers, parents, volunteers, staff and the broader congregation.
Required Education and Experience
• Proven experience leading and directing a student ministry (middle school and/or high school) with a disciplemaking focus.
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college, prefer a master's degree from an accredited evangelical seminary.
• Agreement with the Doctrinal Statement of the EFCA and a willingness to abide by the bylaws of Southwest Community Church.
• Willingness to be licensed and/or ordained by SCC or the EFCA.
