Senior Pastor
Job Description
The Senior Pastor will provide spiritual leadership and shepherding care for St. Luke Evangelical Free Church of Wellington, Missouri.
Qualifications:
• A vibrant, growing relationship with Jesus Christ, demonstrating the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23)
• Meet the qualifications of an elder as described in Scripture (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9; 1 Peter 5:1-3)
• Confident in his calling to the ministry and committed to praying for, discipling, mentoring and spiritually leading the St. Luke congregation
• Able to rightly handle the Scriptures (2 Timothy 2:!5)
• Ability to develop good interpersonal relationships
• Agree with the constitution and by-laws of St. Luke Evangelical Free Church
• Ordained with the EFCA or prepared to participate in the EFCA ordination process
Responsibilities:
- Pastoral:
- Prepare and preach Biblically sound and relevant sermons
- Prepare and lead special services throughout the year (Holy Week, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, etc.)
- Coordinate with the worship Leader on order of service and congregational participation to facilitate and celebrate the Lord’s supper monthly
- As needed, provide time for counseling, funerals, hospital visits, child dedications, marriages, baptismal services and new member classes
- Direct and teach seventh and eighth grade confirmation classes
- Facilitate and give guidance to leadership of various adult and children’s spiritual education programs
- Leadership:
- With assistance of church leadership and ministry teams, create a long-term vision and ministry pathway for St. Luke
- Consistently articulate the vision to the congregation at large; support individual and group ownership
- Guide, align and mentor various groups and ministries of the church toward the shared vision and common goals
- Attend and give reports to church leadership councils
- Community:
- Attend area Ministerial Alliance meetings
- Recognize and support community outreach opportunities
- Be an active member of our rural community through presence at school and community events
- Personal Accountability:
- Accountable to:
-The Spiritual Council on spiritual leadership and feedback
-The Church Council on organization, facilities, administration and financial functions
-Annual review performed by the Pastor Relations Committee - Encouraged to take time for personal prayer and practices that allow his spiritual, physical and mental health to flourish
- Desires continued growth in ministry skills through personal study and continuing education through EFCA conferences and other education opportunities

St. Luke Evangelical Free Church is located 40 miles northeast of Kansas City on a beautiful, rural campus that contains both a traditional church building and a community center that was built in 2008. Wellington, Missouri is situated near picturesque, rolling farmlands with the convenience of easy proximity to a major city to attend sporting events, participate in social opportunities, enjoy shopping and care for medical needs. Our church has a rich heritage of a community of believers who desire to follow Christ. From our roots as a German speaking congregation to our current setting as members of the EFCA, our church has always desired to “know him and make him known.” We are an old church with a proud history and yet a purpose-driven church with a youthful outlook firmly fixed on the future.
Our congregation seeks a pastor who preaches sound doctrine, addresses sin biblically and yet is culturally sensitive and not unnecessarily divisive. We desire a pastor who demonstrates shepherding through relationship as Jesus did with His disciples, and who is interested in giving insight and vision to further ways St. Luke Church can reach out to our community through programs and outreach opportunities. Leadership and a vision for rural churches are essential strengths of a pastor for our church. Our pastor should agree with the standards outlined for senior pastor of St. Luke Church.
